Second Aid

First Aid: Body • Second Aid: Mind

Second Aid provides immediate support in moments of emotional distress, like First Aid but for the mind.

First Aid for physical health. Second Aid for mental health.

It incorporates psychological first aid training principles, and is designed to fit alongside existing First Aid kits to normalise mental health worldwide.

Every Second Aid exercise is based on evidence-based psychological methods, including CBT and behavioural techniques, each adapted into simple, self-guided steps for real-world use.

Additional support via professional helplines is always accessible if needed.

How It Works

Remember, we can only help those who want help; forcing it makes them more resistant.

The best option is to share Second Aid so they feel empowered to help themselves when they're ready.

Sometimes, our loved ones don't reach out for help.
This is for them.

If you've used Second Aid, you already know me. I'm a designer & programmer who cares, and I coded every single pixel, word, and visual experience you've seen, so our loved ones can find help even when we're not around.

How did I do it?

With 20 years of technical experience, 15 years of entrepreneurial experience, and a lifetime being a pillar of emotional support for loved ones.

Second Aid is the 4th mental health app I've built, one that combines the teachings from the first 3 into 1 beautifully designed experience.

It's free. It's private. It's powerful.

No user accounts. No cookies. No ads. Just pure selfless support, something I've always wished for everyone to have.

The Psychology

The Psychology
Explained Evidence-based

Second Aid is built on evidence-based psychological methods, adapted into simple, self-guided exercises for immediate support.

This enables effective self-stabilisation in complete privacy, equivalent to First Aid, life-critical for those conditioned to not ask for help.

Calm Exercise

This is based on established techniques used in CBT, ACT, and mindfulness-based therapies to reduce physical tension, interrupt spiralling thoughts, and restore control.

Step 1
Abdominal
Breathing

An animated circle expands on inhale and contracts slower on exhale, with prompts to guide slow nasal breathing, stomach expansion, and relaxed shoulders.

This is based on paced diaphragmatic breathing with extended exhalation, a technique used to increase parasympathetic activity, counter hyperventilation, and regulate CO₂ levels during acute distress.

Step 2
Emotion
Check-In

A structured list of emotions is presented, with each identified as "yes", "a little", or "no", helping de-identify from what is being felt.

This is based on affect labelling and cognitive defusion, techniques used to reduce limbic reactivity and increase emotional clarity.

Step 3
Embracing
Peace

Selected emotions are revisited, with low emotions attenuated on the exhale and positive emotions reinforced on the inhale, guided by the same paced breathing.

This is based on emotional processing, exposure-based techniques, and cognitive reappraisal, used to reduce emotional intensity and strengthen positive affect.

Grief Exercise

This is based on established techniques used in grief therapy and expressive writing interventions to process loss, organise unresolved emotions, and maintain a continuing bond while adapting to absence.

Step 1
Untangling
Emotions

A structured list of emotions is presented, with each identified as "yes", "a little", or "no", helping de-identify from what is being felt and bring clarity to complex grief responses.

This is based on affect labelling and emotional differentiation, techniques used to reduce limbic reactivity and increase emotional clarity during grief processing.

Step 2
Light
Release

A modern, more private form of letter-writing, with a one-way, WhatsApp-like messaging interface for externalising thoughts and unresolved communication without expectation of response.

This is based on expressive writing and continuing bonds techniques, widely used in grief therapy to process unresolved emotions, maintain connection, and adapt to loss.

Step 3
Invisible
Connections

An animation shows two lights meeting and moving together, before one fades and the other dims, followed by a wider view revealing many others who have experienced the same loss, gradually lighting up together again.

This is based on meaning reconstruction and social normalisation, techniques used in grief therapy to reduce perceived isolation, integrate loss into a broader context, and support emotional adaptation.

Overwhelm Exercise

This exercise is based on established techniques used in behavioural activation, cognitive load regulation, and mind-body integration to identify imbalance, reduce overload, and restore functional clarity and control.

Step 1
Your
Mind

A short set of questions assesses current mental load, including work intensity, rest, and creative activity, helping identify patterns of cognitive overload and rumination.

This is based on cognitive load assessment and metacognitive awareness, used to detect overload and restore attentional control.

Step 2
Your
Body

A short set of questions assesses physical state, including activity, diet, and time in nature, helping identify physiological contributors to overwhelm.

This is based on somatic awareness and behavioural activation, used to restore physiological regulation and support mental stability.

Step 3
Your
Balance

Responses from mind and body are brought together to identify imbalance and guide targeted behavioural adjustment, helping rebalance mental and physical load.

This is based on self-regulation and behavioural adjustment, used to restore equilibrium and improve functioning.

Loneliness Exercise

This exercise is based on established techniques used in shadow work, self-disclosure theory, and identity integration to reduce perceived isolation, increase self-acceptance, and reconnect fragmented parts of the self.

Step 1
Public
Self

A 3D mask is shown facing forwards, with users writing traits, behaviours, and identities directly onto the visible outer surface of the mask, representing the self presented to the world.

This is based on self-concept mapping and social identity awareness, used to increase insight into how individuals present themselves socially and maintain connection.

Step 2
Hidden
Self

The 3D mask rotates to reveal its shadowed interior, with users privately writing hidden emotions, fears, traits, or experiences onto the inside surface of the mask.

This is based on shadow work, emotional disclosure, and cognitive defusion, techniques used to reduce shame, increase self-awareness, and weaken perceived social disconnection.

Step 3
Self
Acceptance

Users are shown the complete 3D mask and can rotate between its outer and inner surfaces, bringing both the visible and hidden self into awareness while encouraging acceptance without shame.

This is based on self-integration and interpersonal disclosure, techniques used to reduce internal fragmentation, increase authenticity, and strengthen perceived social connection.

Clarity Exercise

This exercise is based on established techniques used in emotional differentiation, parts work, and metacognitive awareness to identify emotions, increase self-understanding, and bring clarity to complex internal states.

Step 1
Identifying
Emotions

A structured list of emotions is presented, with each identified as "yes", "a little", or "no", helping transform unclear emotional states into identifiable feelings.

This is based on affect labelling and emotional differentiation, techniques used to reduce limbic reactivity and increase emotional clarity.

Step 2
Mapping
Emotions

Users map each identified emotion to different parts of themselves, such as the ego, heart, or soul, helping distinguish where emotions feel psychologically connected.

This is based on parts work and metacognitive awareness, techniques used to increase self-observation, emotional differentiation, and internal insight.

Step 3
Emotional
Clarity

A complete overview of emotions and their associated inner parts is presented, helping users observe their current emotional state more clearly and reflect on possible underlying causes.

This is based on emotional processing and self-reflection techniques, used to increase emotional awareness and support deeper understanding of internal experiences.

Second Aid does not just integrate effective psychological methods, it applies them in a way that is itself psychologically effective at scale.

Societal behaviour does not change with instruction alone, but with simple, self-administered tools.

We did not ask people to be hygienic, we gave them soap. For safety, we gave them seatbelts. For physical healthcare, we gave them First Aid. For mental healthcare, we give them Second Aid.

Second Aid makes effective psychological methods themselves effective at scale.
